How to Source Products from China for Amazon FBA:

A Global Seller's Complete Guide

Published: 4 May 2026 | By Epic Sourcing Global | Category: Amazon FBA & E-Commerce Sourcing

Amazon FBA (Fulfilled by Amazon) has created one of the most accessible entrepreneurial opportunities of the past decade. Sellers around the world — in the United States, Europe, Singapore, the UAE, India, and beyond — have built profitable businesses by sending inventory to Amazon's fulfilment centres and letting Amazon handle storage, packing, and shipping to customers.

The engine behind most successful Amazon FBA businesses? Manufacturing in China.

China produces an enormous share of the world's consumer goods — from electronics and kitchenware to pet accessories, fitness equipment, beauty tools, and children's toys. For Amazon FBA sellers, accessing that manufacturing capacity at competitive prices is the difference between a product that makes money and one that does not.

This guide is written for Amazon FBA sellers worldwide (outside of Australia, the UK, and Canada, where Epic Sourcing has dedicated local teams). It covers the entire China sourcing journey: product selection, finding and vetting suppliers, quality control, FBA prep requirements, and shipping to Amazon's fulfilment centres. By the end, you will have a clear, actionable roadmap.

Step 1: Product Research — The Foundation of Everything

Before approaching a single supplier in China, you need a product worth sourcing. This is not a guide about Amazon product research specifically, but the sourcing angle matters here: not every product that looks profitable in a research tool is actually viable to manufacture in China at a margin that works.

Sourcing Viability Checklist Before You Commit

  • Can it be manufactured at scale in China? Almost everything can, but complex electronics with proprietary components are harder and riskier than simple goods
  • Is the product category subject to intellectual property claims? Branded goods, patented designs, and copyrighted characters are minefields on Amazon
  • What are the regulatory requirements in your target market? Products sold on Amazon US must comply with US regulations (CPSC, FCC, FDA depending on category). EU sellers face CE marking requirements. Know your compliance obligations before you source
  • What is the realistic landed cost? Calculate manufacturing cost + freight + customs duty + Amazon FBA fees + returns. If your net margin is below 25–30%, rethink the product
  • Does the product have a quality specification you can clearly define? Vague requirements lead to variable quality, which leads to negative Amazon reviews

Epic Sourcing works with FBA sellers during the product research phase to provide China-side cost estimates before they invest significant time in a product concept. This avoids the common mistake of falling in love with a product idea only to find the economics do not work once you have a supplier quote in hand.

Step 2: Finding Qualified Chinese Suppliers

There are several ways to find Chinese suppliers for Amazon FBA products. Each has its pros, cons, and appropriate use cases.

Alibaba.com

Alibaba is the default starting point for most international FBA sellers. It is in English, has buyer protection (Trade Assurance), and allows you to message suppliers, request samples, and place orders without needing Chinese language skills.

The trade-off is cost — prices on Alibaba typically carry a margin above factory cost, because many Alibaba sellers are trading companies rather than manufacturers. For early-stage sourcing and low-volume test orders, Alibaba is excellent. For scaling, you may want to explore deeper.

1688.com

As we cover in our companion guide on sourcing from 1688.com, Alibaba's domestic Chinese platform offers lower prices but requires navigating a Chinese-language interface and managing more of the supplier relationship complexity yourself. FBA sellers doing meaningful volume increasingly use 1688 for established, proven products.

Canton Fair and Trade Shows

The Canton Fair (held in Guangzhou, China, twice yearly in April/May and October/November) is the world's largest trade fair and an excellent place to meet verified manufacturers face-to-face. For Amazon FBA sellers looking to build exclusive supplier relationships or find products not widely available online, attending the Canton Fair is a significant competitive advantage. Read our complete Canton Fair guide for tips on making the most of it.

Sourcing Agents

A professional China sourcing agent identifies and vets suppliers on your behalf, often across multiple platforms and through factory visits. This is particularly valuable for FBA sellers who do not have time to manage supplier communications, quality control, and logistics while also running their Amazon business.

Epic Sourcing works with FBA sellers globally to identify reliable Chinese manufacturers, negotiate pricing, arrange samples, conduct factory audits, manage production quality, and organise FBA-compliant shipping. Learn about our FBA sourcing services.

Step 3: Vetting and Qualifying Suppliers

Finding a supplier is step one. Making sure they are the right supplier is step two — and this is where many FBA sellers get into trouble by moving too fast.

Essential Supplier Qualification Steps

  • Request a Business Licence: Any legitimate Chinese manufacturer can provide their 营业执照 (business licence). Verify it is current and that the company name matches what appears on their website and invoices
  • Factory Audit or Video Tour: Before placing any meaningful order, arrange either a remote video tour of the production facility or an in-person factory audit through a third party
  • Request References: Ask for the contact details of other international buyers they have worked with. Legitimate suppliers welcome this request
  • Sample Order: Never skip samples. Order a small batch of production samples (not just a single prototype) to assess quality consistency across units
  • Assess Communication Quality: A supplier who is slow to respond, vague about specifications, or evasive about production capacity during the pre-order phase will be more difficult once you have paid a deposit

Epic Sourcing conducts factory audits on behalf of international FBA sellers as a standalone service. We visit factories, verify their capabilities, assess quality systems, and provide a written audit report. Enquire about factory audit services.

Step 4: Product Development, Customisation, and Private Labelling

Most successful Amazon FBA sellers do not simply resell generic products. They customise products to create differentiation — through design modifications, private labelling, improved packaging, bundled accessories, or unique colour/size variants. This differentiation is what makes an Amazon listing defensible against competitors.

Working with Chinese Suppliers on Customisation

Chinese manufacturers are generally highly accommodating of customisation requests, especially once you have placed initial orders to demonstrate you are a serious buyer. Common customisation options include:

  • Logo and branding on the product and/or packaging
  • Colour, size, or material variations
  • Functional modifications — adding a feature, changing a component, or removing an element that generates negative reviews in competitor listings
  • Custom packaging design — boxes, inserts, instruction manuals
  • Product bundling — combining two complementary products into a single Amazon listing

When requesting customisation, always provide written specifications, diagrams, and visual references. Never rely on verbal descriptions alone. Create a tech pack — a structured document that defines every aspect of the product — and make it part of your purchase agreement. Our guide to creating a tech pack walks you through this process in detail.

Protecting Your Brand

If you are creating a branded product, register your trademark in your target market (US, EU, etc.) before you scale. Amazon's Brand Registry programme offers significant protection for registered trademark holders, including access to A+ Content and enhanced listing controls. Consider also registering a design patent for any unique product design you develop.

Step 5: Quality Control — The Make-or-Break Factor for FBA Success

Amazon's review system means that product quality directly determines your long-term sales performance. One wave of negative reviews due to a quality problem can permanently damage a listing's conversion rate. For FBA sellers, quality control in China is not optional — it is fundamental.

Types of Quality Inspections

  • Pre-production inspection: Verifies that raw materials and components meet your specifications before manufacturing begins
  • During production (DUPRO) inspection: Conducted once 10–20% of the order has been produced, allowing defects to be caught and corrected before the full production run is complete
  • Pre-shipment inspection (PSI): The most common inspection type — conducted after 100% of the order is produced and packed, checking random samples against your quality specifications before goods leave the factory
  • Container loading inspection: Verifies that the correct products are loaded in the correct quantities and that the container is properly packed to avoid transit damage

For Amazon FBA sellers, the pre-shipment inspection is the minimum recommended standard. At this stage, defective products can still be reworked or rejected before they consume valuable FBA storage space and generate negative customer reviews.

Epic Sourcing provides FBA-specific pre-shipment inspections in China, checking not just product quality but also FBA compliance requirements such as barcode placement, labelling, poly-bagging, carton marking, and suffocation warning labels. Learn about our FBA inspection services.

Step 6: FBA Prep Requirements — What China Suppliers Often Get Wrong

Amazon has detailed requirements for how products must be prepared before being received into its fulfilment centres. These requirements vary by product category, marketplace, and fulfilment centre location. Getting them wrong results in rejected shipments, additional fees, and in some cases, product disposal.

Core FBA Prep Requirements to Know

  • Every sellable unit must have a scannable barcode (ASIN FNSKU label, UPC, or EAN). The barcode must be on the outside of any poly bag or packaging, not hidden inside
  • Products that could be considered a suffocation hazard (clear poly bags with openings larger than 5 inches) require a suffocation warning label on the bag
  • Loose products with multiple components must be packaged together so they cannot be separated during transit or at the fulfilment centre
  • Products with expiry dates must have the date clearly visible on the outside of the product and carton
  • Carton dimensions and weight must comply with Amazon's carton requirements (typically max 50 lbs for standard size)
  • Master carton labels must include shipment ID, carrier ID, and number of boxes in the shipment

Many Chinese suppliers are familiar with basic FBA requirements, especially those who regularly export to Amazon sellers. However, it is worth creating a written FBA prep specification document that you provide to your supplier with every order. Never assume the supplier remembers requirements from a previous order.

Epic Sourcing's China team manages FBA prep on behalf of clients — including applying FNSKU labels, poly-bagging, bundling, and ensuring carton marking compliance — either at the factory or through our China consolidation facility.

Step 7: Shipping from China to Amazon FBA Fulfilment Centres

Getting products from your Chinese factory to Amazon's fulfilment centres involves several logistical steps. For most FBA sellers, this means working with a freight forwarder who can handle the China-side export, international freight, destination country customs clearance, and final delivery to Amazon.

Sea Freight vs Air Freight for Amazon FBA

Sea freight is significantly cheaper per kilogram but takes 20–40 days from China to the US, EU, or other markets. Air freight costs more but typically takes 5–10 days. Most established FBA sellers use sea freight for regular replenishment orders and air freight only for urgent restocks or launch inventory.

For US-bound shipments, you will need to factor in a port of entry (typically Los Angeles, Long Beach, or Seattle for West Coast delivery, or New York/Norfolk for East Coast), customs clearance by a licensed customs broker, and final delivery to Amazon's assigned fulfilment centre(s).

Working with a Freight Forwarder

A good freight forwarder will handle: export customs documentation from China, booking the vessel or air cargo space, marine insurance, destination customs clearance, ISF filing (required for US imports), and final delivery to Amazon. Choose a forwarder with specific experience in Amazon FBA shipments — the documentation requirements differ from standard commercial imports.

Navigating US Tariffs and Trade Policy in 2025–2026

For FBA sellers selling on Amazon US, the tariff environment has been volatile and deserves specific attention. The US has maintained and in some cases increased tariffs on Chinese goods across many product categories. As of mid-2026, tariffs on certain categories of Chinese goods remain elevated.

For FBA sellers, this means:

  • Factor current HTS (Harmonized Tariff Schedule) duty rates into your landed cost calculations. Use the US International Trade Commission's HTS database or consult a customs broker
  • Explore whether your product might qualify for a lower duty rate through a different country of origin — many manufacturers have shifted some production to Vietnam, Indonesia, or India
  • Stay up to date on Section 301 tariff exclusions, which periodically allow specific products to import at lower rates
  • Consider whether your product's Chinese origin can be documented for duty drawback purposes

Epic Sourcing can help you assess whether alternative sourcing locations (particularly Vietnam and India, where we have active networks) might reduce your duty exposure without compromising quality or price. Talk to our global sourcing team.

Common Mistakes Amazon FBA Sellers Make When Sourcing from China

Learning from others' mistakes is cheaper than making your own. Here are the most common pitfalls Epic Sourcing sees FBA sellers encounter:

  • Skipping samples to save time: Every experienced FBA seller has a story about an order that looked great in photos but arrived defective because they skipped the sample stage
  • Not having a written spec sheet: Vague product descriptions lead to products that do not match what you envisaged. Write detailed specifications with photos, diagrams, and measurements
  • Releasing payment before inspection: Pay the final 70% of your order value after a pre-shipment inspection has confirmed quality — not before
  • Ignoring Amazon FBA prep requirements until the last minute: Getting your supplier to redo labelling after production is expensive and time-consuming. Include FBA prep requirements in your purchase order from day one
  • Working with only one supplier: Single-source dependency is a business risk. Develop at least one backup supplier for your key products
  • Not registering a trademark before scaling: If you are building a brand, register your trademark in your main selling market before you start driving significant revenue
  • Underestimating lead times: Standard production lead times from China are 20–45 days depending on the product. Add sea freight transit time (20–35 days to the US), and you are looking at 6–12 weeks from order to Amazon shelf. Plan your inventory replenishment cycles accordingly
