Amazon FBA Product Sourcing from China: The Complete Step-by-Step Guide for Sellers

Published: 24 April 2026 | Category: eCommerce | Reading time: 8 min

Amazon FBA (Fulfilment by Amazon) has transformed the way entrepreneurs build product businesses. Instead of managing warehouses and shipping logistics, sellers send their inventory to Amazon's fulfilment centres and let Amazon handle the rest — storage, picking, packing, and delivery.

But there is one part of the FBA model that Amazon does not handle for you: finding the right product and getting it made. That responsibility falls entirely on the seller — and for most successful FBA businesses, it means sourcing from manufacturers in China.

Why Source from China for Amazon FBA?

Manufacturing costs in China are typically 40–70% lower than equivalent production in the US or Europe. China sourcing makes sense when you need custom-branded products, target price-sensitive categories, want moderate MOQs (100–500 units), or need fast 30–60 day production timelines.

Step 1: Product Research and Validation

  • Amazon BSR: Top sellers with BSR below 10,000 signal healthy demand
  • Search volume: Use Helium 10 or Jungle Scout; target 1,000–10,000 searches/month
  • Competitor review analysis: 1–2 star reviews reveal your product improvement roadmap
  • Price vs landed cost: Target selling price should be 4–5x your total landed cost

Step 2: Finding the Right Manufacturer

Alibaba: Filter by 'Verified Supplier' and 'Trade Assurance'. Send a detailed RFQ to 5–8 suppliers with dimensions, materials, MOQ, and packaging requirements.

Global Sources: More serious, export-oriented manufacturers. Particularly strong for electronics and hardware.

Canton Fair: World's largest trade fair, held in Guangzhou each April and October. Unparalleled for meeting manufacturers face-to-face. Read our Canton Fair guide.

Sourcing Agent: For building a scalable business, a China/Vietnam-based sourcing agent provides access to off-platform manufacturers, language capabilities, and quality management.

Step 3: Requesting and Evaluating Samples

  • Request samples from at least 3 suppliers simultaneously and compare side by side
  • Pay for samples — free samples often reflect lower production quality
  • Test rigorously and photograph your approved sample as the quality reference standard

Step 4: Negotiating MOQs and Pricing

  • Start with a market test order at lower MOQ (100–200 units) even at higher unit price
  • Ask about non-customised versions at lower MOQ as a workaround
  • Present yourself as a long-term buyer — suppliers are more flexible on MOQ with growth potential

Step 5: Quality Control

  • In-process inspection at 50% production completion
  • Pre-shipment inspection by SGS, Bureau Veritas, or local quality firm
  • FBA packaging compliance check — Amazon has specific labelling and dimension requirements

Step 6: FBA Prep, Freight, and Shipment

Sea freight (25–35 days) costs 4–6x less than air freight per kg. Use air only for small high-value test batches. China-based FBA prep centres can handle relabelling, poly-bagging, and FNSKU labels before shipment.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Skipping samples to save time
  • Choosing a supplier on price alone
  • Ignoring Amazon compliance requirements during production
  • Ordering too much stock on the first run
  • Treating suppliers as transactional rather than as partners
