How to Source Furniture from China: A Global Buyer's Guide for Hotels, Interior Designers and Retailers
Published: 28 April 2026 | Category: Industry Knowledge | Read time: 10 min
China is the world's largest furniture manufacturer and exporter, accounting for more than a third of global furniture exports by value. From high-volume hospitality contracts to bespoke boutique hotel fit-outs and luxury retail fixtures, Chinese factories produce everything — at a quality range that spans budget commodity all the way to genuine high-end craftsmanship.
For global buyers — hotel groups, interior designers, property developers, independent retailers and e-commerce brands — sourcing furniture from China offers significant cost advantages, enormous product variety, and increasingly impressive quality at all price points. But navigating Chinese furniture manufacturing requires specific knowledge: knowing which regions specialise in what, how to assess factory capabilities, and how to protect yourself from delays, quality issues, and miscommunications.
This guide covers everything you need to know to source furniture from China successfully, whether you're placing your first container or scaling an established hospitality supply chain.

China's Furniture Manufacturing Landscape
Guangdong (Foshan, Dongguan, Guangzhou)
Guangdong province, and Foshan in particular, is often called the "furniture capital of China." It's the epicentre of mid-to-high-end furniture manufacturing — especially living room furniture, sofas, bedroom sets, and hospitality pieces. Foshan is also where the world's largest furniture expo, the China International Furniture Fair (CIFF), is held twice annually.
Zhejiang (Anji)
Anji County is China's dominant producer of office chairs, ergonomic seating, and bamboo furniture. The region has a fully integrated supply chain which keeps costs competitive.
Shandong and Liaoning
These northern provinces specialise in solid wood furniture, particularly using oak, pine, and walnut. Many factories are experienced in working with European and North American specifications.
Jiangsu (Dongtai) and Sichuan
Dongtai is known for rattan and wicker furniture — ideal for tropical resorts, boutique hotels with an organic aesthetic, and garden furniture ranges.
Step 1: Define Your Furniture Brief Clearly
A good furniture brief includes: product category and type, dimensions in millimetres, materials specification, finish and colour references (RAL or Pantone codes), quantity and timeline, standards and certifications, and budget range.
Step 2: Find and Vet Furniture Manufacturers
Online Research and B2B Platforms
Alibaba, Made-in-China, and Global Sources list thousands of furniture suppliers. Look for "Verified Manufacturer" badge, 5+ years operating history, audit reports, response rate above 80%, and detailed product listings with real factory photos.
Trade Shows and Expos
The China International Furniture Fair (CIFF) in Foshan and Guangzhou — held in March and September — is one of the world's largest furniture fairs. The Canton Fair in Guangzhou (April/May and October) is also excellent for furniture sourcing. Canton Fair 2026 — Complete Sourcing Guide
Factory Audits
For furniture contracts above USD 20,000, a factory audit is strongly recommended. Audit reports give you an independent view of the factory's true capability.
Step 3: Sample Development and Approval
Furniture sampling is more involved than sampling small consumer goods. Expect sample lead times of 3–6 weeks, sample costs of USD 200–1,500+ per piece, and shipping costs that may require sea freight. Evaluate construction quality, finish accuracy, dimension accuracy (±5mm tolerance), and durability.
Step 4: Production, QC, and Lead Times
Standard production lead times: 30–60 days after order confirmation. Custom furniture can require 60–90+ days. Most common defects include inconsistent wood colour, foam density below specification, poor stitching on upholstered items, and frame wobble. Commission a pre-shipment inspection for all furniture orders above 20 units.
Step 5: Shipping Furniture from China
- FCL (Full Container Load): A 20-foot container holds approximately 20–25 CBM; a 40-foot holds 55–60 CBM. Most cost-effective for large orders.
- LCL (Less than Container Load): For smaller orders. More handling risk — ensure export-quality cartons with adequate padding.
- Flat-pack vs assembled: Flat-pack reduces shipping volume significantly but may increase labour at destination.
Transit times: US West Coast 15–20 days; Europe 25–35 days; Southeast Asia 7–14 days; Africa or South America 30–45 days.
