In short: FOB (Free On Board) means the Chinese supplier's responsibility — and their cost — ends once your goods are loaded onto the ship at the Chinese port. From that point, the freight, insurance, Irish import VAT and customs clearance are on you. It's usually the better deal for Irish importers once you're ordering a full container or more, because you control the freight booking instead of paying the factory's marked-up shipping rate.

What Does FOB Actually Mean?

FOB is one of the Incoterms — the standard shipping terms used worldwide so buyers and sellers agree exactly where one party's responsibility ends and the other's begins. Under FOB:

  • The supplier pays to get your goods to the Chinese port and loaded onto the vessel
  • The supplier handles Chinese export clearance
  • You (the buyer) pay for and arrange the ocean freight from that point onward
  • You carry the risk and cost from the moment goods are loaded, including insurance, Irish customs clearance, and delivery to your door

FOB vs EXW vs DDP: What's the Difference?

TermSupplier's responsibility ends...You arrange...Best for
EXW (Ex Works)At the factory doorEverything — inland trucking, export clearance, ocean freight, importBuyers with their own freight forwarder who want full control and the lowest quoted unit price
FOB (Free On Board)Once loaded on the ship at the Chinese portOcean freight, insurance, Irish customs and deliveryMost Irish importers ordering a full container (FCL) or more
DDP (Delivered Duty Paid)At your door in Ireland, duty paidNothing — it's all bundled into the supplier's priceFirst-time importers or small, simple orders who want zero logistics hassle

Why Would an Irish Importer Choose FOB Over DDP?

DDP looks simpler on paper — one price, nothing to arrange. But that convenience is priced in. Suppliers quoting DDP add their own margin on freight and customs, and they usually route the shipment through a freight forwarder of their choosing, not yours. Once you're shipping a full or part container regularly, booking FOB freight yourself (or through your own sourcing partner) is almost always cheaper and gives you far better visibility on where your goods actually are.

Worked Example: FOB Cost from China to Dublin

Here's a simplified worked example for a 20-foot container of general goods shipped FOB Shenzhen to Dublin:

Cost itemWho paysTypical cost (EUR)
Goods (factory price, FOB Shenzhen)You, to the supplierVaries by product
Ocean freight, Shenzhen → Rotterdam/DublinYou, to your freight forwarder€1,800 – €3,200 (20ft container, market-dependent)
Marine cargo insuranceYou~0.3 – 0.5% of goods value
Irish import VAT (23% standard rate)You, at clearance23% of goods value + freight + duty
Customs dutyYou, at clearance0 – 12% depending on HS code (China has no EU trade agreement, so standard third-country rates apply)
Customs clearance & port handling (Dublin/Rotterdam transhipment)You, to your customs broker€150 – €400

Most direct China–Ireland container shipments route via a transhipment port like Rotterdam or Antwerp before a short feeder vessel leg to Dublin, which is worth building into your lead-time estimate — add roughly 5-10 days versus a port with a direct China service.

What Should Be in Your FOB Purchase Agreement?

  • The exact loading port (e.g. "FOB Shenzhen," not just "FOB China")
  • Who books the vessel and by what date the goods must be ready
  • Packing and container-loading responsibility, and who supervises it
  • What happens if the goods aren't ready when your booked vessel arrives (demurrage risk)

FAQs: FOB Shipping for Irish Importers

Does FOB mean the supplier pays for the ocean freight to Ireland?

No — that's the most common FOB mix-up. FOB means the supplier pays only up to loading at the Chinese port. Everything from that point, including the full ocean freight to Ireland, is the buyer's cost and responsibility.

Is FOB cheaper than DDP?

Usually, yes, once you're shipping a reasonable volume — a full or part container — because you avoid the margin suppliers add to arrange DDP freight themselves. For small, occasional orders, DDP can still work out simpler and cost-competitive.

Who arranges customs clearance into Ireland under FOB terms?

You do, as the buyer — either directly with a customs broker or through your freight forwarder/sourcing partner, who typically handles this as part of the freight booking.

What port do most FOB China-to-Ireland shipments arrive at?

Most arrive via Dublin Port, usually after transhipment through a major European hub like Rotterdam or Antwerp, since very few carriers run a direct China-to-Ireland service.

Can I negotiate the FOB price with a Chinese supplier?

Yes — FOB unit prices are generally more negotiable than DDP all-in prices, especially once you're ordering container volumes or placing repeat orders.
