How to Find a Reliable China Sourcing Agent (And Avoid the Fakes)
Published 9 April 2026 | By Epic Sourcing Global | 11 min read
The sourcing industry is largely unregulated — anyone can call themselves a sourcing agent. A bad one can cost you money, time, and in some cases an entire product launch. A good one can become one of the most valuable partners your business has.
What Is a China Sourcing Agent?
A China sourcing agent acts on your behalf to find, vet, negotiate with, and manage suppliers — bridging the gap between international buyers and Chinese manufacturers across language, culture, time zone, and logistics.
The Red Flags: How to Spot a Fake or Low-Quality Sourcing Agent
Red Flag 1: They Refuse to Disclose Their Fee Structure
Commission-based agents are financially incentivised to recommend factories that pay them the highest commissions, not factories that are right for you. A reputable agent will be open about how they charge.
Red Flag 2: No Verifiable China Presence
The actual sourcing work requires people physically in China. Ask specifically: where are your team members based? Do you have permanent staff in China, or do you use contractors?
Red Flag 3: They Cannot Name Factories or Show Evidence of Relationships
A credible sourcing agent has a real supplier network built over years. Vague answers about 'working with thousands of factories' are a warning sign.
Red Flag 4: Pressure to Pay Large Upfront Fees Before Any Scoping
Legitimate agents typically offer an initial consultation before asking for payment.
Red Flag 5: They Promise Unrealistically Low Prices
There are real cost floors based on raw materials, labour, and overheads. Agents who promise the impossible are either inexperienced or planning to cut corners on quality.
Red Flag 6: Poor Communication and Response Times
If a sourcing agent is slow to respond in initial conversations, it tells you exactly how they will behave when you have a time-sensitive quality issue in production.
10 Questions to Ask Before Hiring a China Sourcing Agent
- Where exactly are your team members based in China?
- What product categories do you specialise in?
- How do you charge — flat fee, percentage, or supplier commission?
- Can you provide references from clients in the past 12 months?
- How do you vet a new supplier before recommending them?
- What does your quality control process look like?
- How do you handle it if a factory produces off-spec goods?
- Can you manage the freight and logistics side?
- How do you protect my product designs and IP when sharing with factories?
- How are disputes or refunds handled?
What Does a Great Sourcing Agent Look Like?
- They operate as a genuine partner — investing time in understanding your brand and quality standards before recommending anything.
- They have a transparent, clearly documented fee structure.
- They communicate proactively — especially when there is a problem.
- They have real factory relationships, not just access to Alibaba listings.
- They provide documentation — inspection reports, audit results, shipping documents — without you having to chase them.
- They understand logistics as well as sourcing.
