How to Source Furniture from China: A Global Buyer's Guide for Hotels, Interior Designers and Retailers

Published: 28 April 2026 | Category: Industry Knowledge | Read time: 10 min

China is the world's largest furniture manufacturer and exporter, accounting for more than a third of global furniture exports by value. From high-volume hospitality contracts to bespoke boutique hotel fit-outs and luxury retail fixtures, Chinese factories produce everything — at a quality range that spans budget commodity all the way to genuine high-end craftsmanship.

For global buyers — hotel groups, interior designers, property developers, independent retailers and e-commerce brands — sourcing furniture from China offers significant cost advantages, enormous product variety, and increasingly impressive quality at all price points.

China's Furniture Manufacturing Landscape

Guangdong (Foshan, Dongguan, Guangzhou)

Guangdong province, and Foshan in particular, is often called the “furniture capital of China.” It's the epicentre of mid-to-high-end furniture manufacturing — especially living room furniture, sofas, bedroom sets, and hospitality pieces. The China International Furniture Fair (CIFF) is held here twice annually.

Zhejiang (Anji)

Anji County is China's dominant producer of office chairs, ergonomic seating, and bamboo furniture. The region has a fully integrated supply chain with raw materials, foam, fabric, and mechanisms all sourced locally.

Shandong and Liaoning

These northern provinces specialise in solid wood furniture, particularly using oak, pine, and walnut. Many factories are experienced in working with European and North American specifications.

Jiangsu (Dongtai) and Sichuan

Dongtai in Jiangsu is known for rattan and wicker furniture — ideal for tropical resorts, boutique hotels with an organic aesthetic, and garden furniture ranges.

Step 1: Define Your Furniture Brief Clearly

Before approaching any manufacturer, prepare a clear furniture brief including product category, dimensions in millimetres, materials (solid wood species, engineered wood, metal type, upholstery), finish and colour (RAL or Pantone codes), quantity and timeline, applicable standards and certifications, and budget range.

Step 2: Find and Vet Furniture Manufacturers

Alibaba, Made-in-China, and Global Sources list thousands of furniture suppliers. Look for “Verified Manufacturer” badge, 5+ years operating history, audit reports and certifications, and response rate above 80%. Major trade shows include the China International Furniture Fair (CIFF) in Foshan and the Canton Fair in Guangzhou.

Step 3: Sample Development and Approval

Furniture sampling is more involved than sampling small consumer goods. Sample lead time: 3–6 weeks. Sample cost: USD 200–1,500+ per piece. Most factories credit sample costs against the first bulk order. Evaluate construction quality, finish accuracy, dimension accuracy (±5mm tolerance), and durability.

Step 4: Production, QC, and Lead Times

Standard production lead time: 30–60 days. The most common defects in Chinese furniture exports include inconsistent wood colour, foam density below specification, poor stitching on upholstered items, frame wobble, and incorrect hardware substitution. Commission a pre-shipment inspection for all furniture orders above 20 units.

Step 5: Shipping Furniture from China

Sea freight is almost always the practical choice for bulk furniture orders. FCL (20-foot container): approximately 20–25 CBM; 40-foot: 55–60 CBM. Transit times: US West Coast 15–20 days, Europe 25–35 days, Southeast Asia 7–14 days.
